Have you ever heard about FOMO? It is something related with social phenomena in the present era. People, especially teenagers, can experience FOMO when they believe others are having more fun, exciting experiences, or are more successful than they are. It’s very much tied to the social media age, where we’re constantly exposed to curated versions of others’ lives. It can lead to feelings of inadequacy or fear of missing out on something better.

In other words, FOMO, short for Fear of Missing Out, is a common feeling, characterized by worry and anxiety or unease about being left behind. It stems from the fear of not being up-to-date with the latest news, gossip, fashions, or trends popularized on social media.

This fear can lead to mental health issues such as stress and depression, as it can disrupt real-world activities. Research indicates that FOMO affects teenagers the most. Girls with FOMO will experience depression that leads them to often use social media more frequently. While boys with it, driven by anxiety, tend to increase their connection in social media. Unfortunately, based on some studies, excessive social media use can contribute to higher stress levels due to FOMO. However, there are some actions to avoid FOMO.
