NUTRITION IN ETHIOPIA
• 40% of children under five are stunted
• 9% of children under five are wasted
• 25% of children under five are underweight
• 17% of women of reproductive age have anaemia
• 3% of children are overweight or obese
• Proportion of underweight children under the age of five declined 39% between 2000 and 2014
• Rural children are more likely to be underweight (27%) than urban children (15%)
• Wasting is high in children whose mothers have no education (11%)
WHO Country Office supports Ethiopia to reach the WHO 2025 Global Nutrition Targets:
• 40% reduction in the number of children under-5 who are stunted
• 50% reduction of anaemia in women of reproductive age
• 30% reduction in low birth weight
• no increase in childhood overweight
• increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months up to at least 50%
• reduce and maintain childhood wasting to less than 5%
What will happen if there is no effort to handle the situation in Ethiopia?
I. The mortality rate of elderly in Ethiopia will probably increase rapidly.
II. The rate of children born with health and growth problems will possibly increase.
III. The number of overweight children will possibly be greater than the underweight ones.
IV. The children will probably experience below average intelligence and low body immunity.
